The Upper Belvedere with its world-famous collections takes centre stage. Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt's architecture is to be continued in a contemporary language in the best sense of the word. In terms of atmosphere and spatial configuration, the new visitor centre confidently draws attention to the unique historical building without dominating it and develops a memorable and unmistakable sequence of rooms, the underground centrepiece of which is a newly created ‘Sala Sotterranea’. This forms the prelude to the experience of the baroque complex and connects via a powerful staircase to the Sala Terrena (on the ground floor) and the Marble Hall (on the first floor).
